LED Lighting: Causes of Flicker and Solutions
If you have installed LED lights and sometimes they flicker. The main reason can be that low-quality LED lights have been used for the premises. Let’s first understand what is flickering of light sources? The flicker is a rapid on/off cycle of any LED light source. Practically the phenomenon is a nuisance.
Flickering is differentiated into two parts — Visible and invisible. First, visible flickering has a frequency strength of less than 100 Hz (100 times less than a second). On the other hand, invisible flicker strength is more than 100Hz and easy harmful for human cognitive functions.
There are several reasons due to which flickering issues can develop inside LED light bulbs. First, there can be voltage fluctuations which often cause occasion dimming and flicker inside the light-medium. Let’s discuss some of the reasons due to which flickering occurs and the solutions.
The prompt rush of current in appliances
Certain appliances require more amount of electricity when they are turned on. The rush of electricity inside the appliances causes the voltage to drop, and if the lights are also present in that circuit, there will be a flicker issue.
Separate voltage regulators are required for the appliances. Consult with a lighting professional for a better solution.
Sloppy wiring
Another phenomenon that is commonly seen in flickering LED lights is loose connections and circuits. If the LED bulb is loose, then tighten it further.
If there is dust present inside the LED lamp, then clear the dust and blow the connection points. Finally, check the loose connection of the fixture. A certified electrician can check the issue and secure the lighting fixtures.
Incompatible dimmers with the LED lights
After upgrading your interiors with LED lights, you might face the issue of flickering due to an underloaded dimmer. Old fashioned dimmers cannot handle new lights sources as they can handle only loads below 20W. The solutions are -
- Carefully read the instructions attached with the LED lamps. The dimmers also come with wattage ratings which depend on the type of LED light source used.
- Be sure to buy from high-quality LED brands having standard certifications like ENERGY STAR, etc.
- Invest in quality dimmer controls for the LED light fixtures. A certified light professional can understand the correct load permitted for the LED light fixture. Upgrade the dimmers if you have installed new LED light fixtures.
